Hospitality is defined as “the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers.”

The hospitality industry added the payment part. Few mass retailers are good at creating memorable, personal experiences for their customers. The hospitality industry is much better at it. Successful retailers are adding elements of hospitality to the mix to engage their customers.

Look no further than the addition of a macaron café to L’Occitane, or closer to home, Supercheap Auto’s Pitstop where customers are invited to, well, just hang out.

Retail is becoming become less about the product itself and more about how we feel about the brand and the role it has in our lives.

Should we start by calling our customers guests?
